Congressman Christopher Shays Tours Better Packages

Salutes the Firm's Use of Local Vendors

Shelton, Conn., March 22, 2004 Better Packages, the world's leading manufacturer of water-activated tape dispensers, won praise for subcontracting locally from US Representative Christopher Shays (R-Bridgeport), who last week visited its Shelton facility.

Shays had a chance to see first hand how Better Packages employees assemble its packaging machine's components, many of which are made by Connecticut-based firms, including Bridgeport-based Aracade Manufacturing and Quatron Manufacturing; American Precision Manufacturing, Watertown; Tritown Plastics, Essex; and Putnam Plastics, Branford.

"At a time when it is difficult for many manufacturers to avoid using global partners, Better Packages is to be commended for being able to subcontract so many of its parts right here in Connecticut," said Shays.

"More than 60 percent of our materials come from Connecticut companies," said Philip White, president of Better Packages. "Besides patriotism it is good business for us to support hometown and US companies. It allows us to build quality machines while doing our small part to keep our economy strong."

Better Packages, which holds more than a 60% market share in the water-activated tape dispenser market, requires metal stamping and plastic fabrication for its machines. Most of the work is done by other Connecticut firms, according to White.

Water-activated tape provides more security than adhesive tape, which can often be removed from a carton without alerting customers. This has become even more important with the increased concern for safety and security, said White.
